Northern Ireland #72

This morning I made a contact into Northern Ireland with MI0AHH who lives in Cooktown. I'm confused about the DXCC entity because I don't see it listed on my DXCC list. I've worked two other stations in Ireland with an EI designation but this is my first with the MI designation. Perhaps someone can inform me about the difference between the two (if any).

Last night was spent on the 30 meter QRP frequency of 10.106 where I worked several stations here in the United States.

Yes, Northern Ireland is a separate DXCC (as are all the countries within the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).

Hi, Southern Ireland or the Irish Republic/Eire is not part of the United Kingdom, and has the callsign EI. It therefore counts as a DXCC entity. Confusingly, it is part of the British Isles!

Now, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and carries the prefix GI or MI (newer callsigns).

It too counts as a separate DXCC entity - we have G (England), GI (Northern Ireland), GM (Scotland), GW (Wales), GD (Island of Man), GJ (Jersey) and GU (Guernsey), all separate entitities.

So, congratulations - you worked a new one!

Hello Paul and Steve,

Thank you both for the information about Northern Ireland. I'll make the changes in the log book. TU
